MAI scientists suggest creating solar power station in orbit

Russian scientists propose creating a space solar power station. This way of producing energy is cheaper than the production of hydrocarbon fuels. This is stated in the report of the representatives of the head of Roscosmos TsNIImash Research Institute, Moscow Aviation Institute and Lavochkin Association, which will be submitted to the Academic Conference on Astronautics, reports TASS.

“Space technology is able to solve the problems of energy supply electricity to earthlings and weather stabilization by creating space solar power stations (SSPS). There is a need for state creation program SSPS in Russia, as it’s done in Japan, and the first stage of the program should be the establishment of a small-scale centrifugal laser prototype (about 10 kW) on the Progress cargo vehicle or a specialized platform”, — the document says.

As the researchers note the SSPS program was accepted in Japan after the accidents at three nuclear reactors. The terms are scheduled for 2025.

“As the price of a “space power” is expected to be six times cheaper than the earth one, it is possible for Japan to gain the world energy market. At the same time organizations such as Gazprom, Rosneft and Rosatom with large human resources and plans will not be in demand an end to the era of hydrocarbons”, — the report says.
