First supercomputer. Aero Hackathon AI Challenge launched in MAI
On December 8, the VI International Aero Hackathon, AI Challenge, started on the basis of the MAI IT-Center. It is an intellectual competition giving students and postgraduates the opportunity to compete in solving high-tech tasks of neural network aerodynamics that require the use of supercomputers. This is the first real time aero hackathon in three years.
More than 200 applications were submitted to participate in the 50-seat event. Most of the participants are MAI students who intend to enroll in a master's degree program related to supercomputers, programming, data analysis and artificial intelligence. There are also representatives of other universities: ITMO, National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, Moscow State Technological University "Stankin", Bauman Moscow State Technical University, MPEI, Moscow State University of Railway Engineering.
The organizers noted significant increase of the interest among first-year students: there are more than 30% of them among the participants. The event was also attended by students from China who study at MAI in the English-language master's degree program "Technologies of supercomputer modeling of complex technical systems".
– The tasks were changed this year. All teams take one and the same task, but they use different approaches and data to solve it. The participants were given a unique opportunity to use the computing power of three MAI supercomputers: Research Institute 101 and Department 806. Vadim Kondarattsev, the head of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, carried out a workshop, during which the task was set in details and an overview of the promising areas for solution was given. The choice of approach is up to the teams, and the success is determined by the motivation, competencies of the participants in the field of programming and aerodynamics," says Maria Bulakina, head of the MAI IT Center.
The teams had 48 hours to solve the case. The defense of the works will be held on December 10 in front of an expert jury, which consists of the representatives from academic and industry institutes, leading Russian companies where supercomputer modeling technologies are actively developing, as well as a number of MAI professors. There are employees of Beeline, Teraplan, Aeroflot, RAS, Yakovlev, TsAGI, Wildberries in the jury.
The experts will have to choose the winners who will receive cash prize, merch and additional points for admission to the master's program. The evaluation criterion will be the quality of the proposed solution to the problem. A prerequisite is that participants must submit working code for calculations on the MAI supercomputer. It is no coincidence that the slogan of the event is "Combining science, supercomputers and programming."
MAI IT-Center together with the Institute No. 8 "Computer Science and Applied Mathematics" and the Competence Center "Mathematical Modeling" are traditionally the organizers of the hackathon. The Mathematical Modeling Center is also the main partner, the main beneficiary of the results and the owner of supercomputer resources.
