How MAI residents created Eve: MAI competence center "Additive Technologies" got a mascot

June 30, 2023

The competence center "Additive Technologies" of Moscow Aviation Institute has its own mascot robot Eve. She was invented and created by Svetlana Mikhaleva and Kirill Mazurov, students of the Institute No. 9 "General Engineering".

– The idea of creating a mascot appeared back in 2019, but then its development stopped at the stage of creating an image. Three years later, we remembered about it and decided to bring it to life. We have never done such projects before, and creating Eve was a great way to realize our creative ambitions, – says Svetlana Mikhaleva.

The whole process of creating the robot took nine months. At first, the students worked out the design, trying to make the image refined, but at the same time technological and cosmic, which correlates with the activities of MAI. The next stage was CAD modeling, after which the parts were printed on a 3D printer, processed and assembled into a single robot.

– This project was implemented on pure enthusiasm and desire to learn something new. Our proficiency in modern geometric modeling programs implies the creation of engineering products, but not design projects, which is why there were interesting ways to implement certain elements of design and appearance. For example, the work on the models of the head and hip took place simultaneously in several programs with different data formats, which allowed us to eventually get the dimensions in a given range and ensure the connection of other parts, while creating an organic shape, – Kirill Mazurov shares. – We used the most affordable FDM technology to print all the main parts. Some dimensional details were printed for several days, and the whole process lasted almost two months.

Eve's weight is 20 kg. All its parts are movable, and the eyes are equipped with a backlight, the electronics for which were also made by students. Now they are planning to improve the design, and in the future they are going to continue working on similar projects on regular basis.
