Rotorcraft: what MAI demonstrates at HeliRussia-2022

May 19, 2022

On May 19, the International Helicopter Industry Exhibition HeliRussia-2022 started in Moscow. Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation is the organizer of the exhibition. During the three days of the event, the International Exhibition Center "Crocus Expo" demonstrates the world achievements of the entire range of products and services of the helicopter industry – from design and production to operation. Moscow Aviation Institute participates in both business and exhibition programs of the event.

MAI stand: the developments

Traditionally, the department 102 "Helicopter Design" of Moscow Aviation Institute shows its developments at the exhibition. The visitors of the MAI stand may observe three rotary-wing aircraft purge models of vertical take-off and landing that are meant for further characteristics analysis in the MAI T-1 wind tunnel. Among them there are: the Project ZERO tiltrotor purge model, that is produced with extensive use of additive technologies on the equipment of MAI resource centers, the variable purge model of the Mi-171A2 multipurpose helicopter, designed and produced for Moscow Helicopter Plant named after M.L. Mil, and collapsible purge model of the Mi-171A3 offshore helicopter meant for operation in oil and gas fields on the shelves, that was shown at the MAKS-2021 for the first time.

The scientists of the Department 310 "Electric Power, Electromechanical and Biotechnical systems" present the demonstrator of a fully superconducting electric generator, and the MAI student design bureau and Department 102 – the stand for testing propellers of unmanned aerial vehicles with electric drive. The stand allows to determine the main aerodynamic characteristics of the propellers of unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the characteristics of the electric motors that drive them into rotation.

Besides, the guests and participants of the exhibition are able to inspect the DC protection and switching apparatus at MAI stand, evaluate the set of solutions for modeling and monitoring the weight characteristics of a high-tech industrial product "Weighing Platform", test the stand for the formation of requirements for a helmet-mounted target designation and indication system and a helmet-mounted target designation and indication system.

The scientists of the MAI "Energy Systems" Competence Center also present augmented reality technology aimed at the efficiency of desing/production and operation of helicopter equipment improvement for the first time. With the help of special AR-glasses, guests of the exhibition will see the virtual model of the Ka-226 helicopter fuel system and the demonstrator of the test installation of the accident-resistant fuel system of the Ka-226 helicopter.

Participation in the business program

On the first day of the HeliRussia exhibition, MAI representatives took part in the scientific and practical conference "Aviation Avionics" and the "Financial instruments for the helicopter industry" round table.

Sergey Grachev, Director of the "Energy Systems" MAI Competence Center, presented the complex for testing and certification of the accident-resistant fuel system of the KA-226T helicopter, where both standard operating modes and failure modes might be worked out. The project was implemented by MAI with the participation of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Gleb Boyarsky, the engineer of the "Avionics" MAI Center, told about the system of objective control of the activities of the crew: how to assess the quality of pilots' readiness to control an aircraft in non-standard situations objectively with the help of technical means and how to assess the quality of information and control fields.
