UAVs, robots, rocket models: MAI Young Engineer conference 2021

On 29 May, the 1st 'Young Engineer' All-Russian Scientific and Technical Conference was held at the MAI Alferievo Aviation Training Base. More than 100 cadets and schoolchildren from Moscow, Moscow Region, St. Petersburg and Tambov, who are undergoing training under the programmes of the MAI Centre for Technological Support of Education, took part in the event.

Welcoming remarks to the participants were addressed by Dmitry Kozorez, MAI Vice-Rector for Educational Work, Anatoly Kachalin, Director of the MAI Resource Centre for Scientific Research and Innovation Technologies, Alexander Shalygin, Director of Alferievo Air Base, Sergey Elsukov, President of the MAI Alumni Club, and Alexei Yezhov, Associate professor of MAI, Chairman of the Committee on Missile Models of the Federation of Aviation Modeling Sport of Russia.

The guest of honor of the conference was the Hero of Russia, pilot-cosmonaut, graduate of MAI Mikhail Kornienko: he visited all the sections, talked to the cadets and schoolchildren and answered their questions. Mikhail Borisovich gave a high appraisal of the event and expressed his desire to participate in the next Young Engineer conferences.

As part of the conference, competitions were held in the following sections: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Aircraft Modeling, Robotics, Rocket Modeling, and Project Work.

Participants in the Robotics and Project Works sections competed for the cup of the cosmonaut twice Hero of the Soviet Union, V.N. Volkov. The winners in the Project Works section were Nikolai Zagorodnev and Danila Olshansky, cadets from the Tambov Cadet Corps named after L.S. Demin, Hero of the Soviet Union and pilot-cosmonaut of the USSR. In the Robotics section the cup was won by pupils of the State Budgetary Educational Institution "School No. 218" and MBOU "Nakhabinsk Secondary School No. 3". Timofey Morozov and Ilya Chernov. The members of the expert committee, who assessed the work of the students were Director of Institute № 7 Robotics and Intelligent Systems MAI Alexander Krivilev, Deputy Director of Institute № 7 Konstantin Tikhonov, head of department 703 Systems Design of aircraft systems Evgeny Neretin, and others.

All Young Engineer conference participants were presented with certificates and souvenirs from the Moscow Aviation Institute.

Masterclasses and demonstration flights were also organised for the guests on the aircraft of the MAI Special Design Bureau of Experimental Aircraft Engineering. The two-seat airplane MAI-223 'Kitten' was piloted by Alexander Serebryakov, Deputy Chief Designer of OSCEC MAI, and Mikhail Kornienko.

Simultaneously with the conference, the stage of the World Cup for model rockets "S.P. Korolev Cup" was held at MAI's airfield, which was attended by athletes from seven Russian universities: the Technological University named after twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Cosmonaut A.A. Leonov, Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman, Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman, Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman, Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman, and Moscow State Aviation Institute. The participants were athletes from seven Russian universities: N.E. Bauman Moscow State Technical University, BSTU VOENMEKH after D.F. Ustinov, National Research University MIET, Belgorod State National Research University, Central Russian Institute of Management - branch of Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, Moscow Aviation Institute.
