On January 13-15, 2020, the defense of master's thesis was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the first graduation ceremony of joint MAI-SJTU master’s double degree program were held.

In September 2017, Moscow Aviation Institute (National Research University) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University launched a joint master's double degree program. The aim of this project is to create a personnel reserve for the Russian-Chinese project of a wide-body long-range aircraft CR929. The partners of the program are such enterprises as United Aircraft Corporation, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, United Engine Corporation, COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) and AECC (Aero Engine Corporation of China).

29 Russian and 23 Chinese students went to Shanghai to start 2.5-year studies. The program participants studied in English in three areas: "Design of Aircraft Structures from Polymer Composite Materials",“Product Lifecycle Management Technologies in Designing Modern Aircraft” and “Aircraft Engines”. The first year they spent at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the second - at Moscow Aviation Institute. In July 2019, the defense of master's thesis took place at MAI, and for the past six months, students have been preparing for graduation paper presentation at SJTU.

On January 13 and 14, participants of the program successfully defended their graduation works in front of the commission, consisting of SJTU professors. Graduation thesis of 3 Russian and 3 Chinese students were especially appreciated and received status “Outstanding Master’s Degree Thesis Work”. The delegation of Moscow Aviation Institute, consisting of specialists and professors, came to get acquainted with the process of thesis defense at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and to support students, with whom they actively work throughout the entire training period.

On January 15, the first solemn graduation ceremony in the history of the program was held. The event was attended by Rector of Moscow Aviation Institute Mikhail Pogosyan, who congratulated graduates and stressed the importance of global education for the development of international projects such as CR929.

Fresh graduates, in turn, addressed the guests of the ceremony with a congratulatory speech in three languages: a Chinese student Wang Xuyang - in Russian, a Russian student Alexander Korchagin - in Chinese, a course leader Ezhen Guryev - in English.

MAI and SJTU continue to actively develop cooperation on joint educational projects: in 2018 and 2019, the second and third enrollment for the joint master's program took place, and in September 2019, students of the joint bachelor's double degree program started their studies.
