International Students Took Silver in Rugby at the MAI Sports Contest “Strength in Motion”
On October 6, 2019, at the stadium “Nauka”, the traditional “Strength in Motion” sports contest of Moscow Aviation Institute took place. Bad weather did not prevent a record number of MAI students from taking part in the sports festival.
In competitions were 11 sports, in which 957 students of MAI institutes, faculties and branches competed. For the first time, a separate team of MAI international students and girls team took part in the MAI sports contest. In total there were 14 student teams.
Competitions were held in an interesting, exciting fight. Especially spectacular were the tug of war, volleyball, indoor soccer and rugby touch (this sport was first included in the “Strength in Motion”).
International students team took the second place in the tournament in rugby touch. It is a non-contact kind of rugby, which is very well suited for both experienced athletes and beginners.
As a result, the University’s strongest teams reached the 1/2 rugby touch finals: faculty team No. 1, institute team No. 5, institute team No. 6 and a team of international students. At this stage, the team of Institute No. 5 in a bitter struggle defeated the team of Institute No. 6 with a score of 5: 4, and the team of international students defeated the favorites of the tournament, the team of faculty No. 1 with a score of 4:2. As a result, in the final, the teams of the institute No. 5 and the team of international students fought for gold medals.
Experience and skill won in this game, because 3 masters of sports of Russia in rugby played for the team of Institute No. 5. The game ended with a score of 4: 2 in favor of Institute No. 5. Team of MAI international students took the second place, the third place in the rugby touch tournament was taken by the team of the institute No. 6.

The winners awarding of the “Strength in Motion” sports contest will be held in the near future. Rector of Moscow Aviation Institute Mikhail Pogosyan will personally award the students.
